Mars

The count down is on ! NASA plans to launch the Curiosity, a land rover. It will be launched on November 25 ,at 6:00 A.M. They just found out that there might have been life and water on Mars. Landing on Mars will be no easy feat. Curiosity is set to land in a huge crater. Iron-rich dust and rock give Mars a red surface and a pink sky.Curiosity is much bigger and more powerful than any other spacecraft that NASA has sent to Mars. Curiosity is about the size of a car. Curiosity is twice as long as Spirit or Opportunity, two rovers that landed on Mars in 2004. Spirit is a rover that went to Mars and was suposed to last for a short time but it has lasted for six years. Spirit is stuck in this quick sand ,so NASA is trying to find a way to help Spirit get out with a model rover.

Fun fact

The Romans called Mars the god of war because it's red color looked like blood.

Our week!!!! ;-) so far.....

On Monday it was raining and it was very very cold and we went to art. In art we drew pics of what is in AZ because AZ's b-day is coming up on Febuary 14th. When we came back from art we started this thing about what we imagine about the internet.
After lunch we watched a movie in the MPR because it was rainy day schedule. Then we packed up to leave.
Today we went to the computer lab and did IXL math. We came back to class to study for our map test . We reviewed our math review and then we went to lunch.
When we came back in, Mr. Miller read us a chapter of Dagger Quick by Brian Eames. Then we finished our internet pictures.

Pour Quoi Stories

Pour Quoi Stories are made up stories about how things or animals came to be, like for example, how the elephants got their trunks or how lava became hot and stuff like that. This is what we did,we first made a rough draft of the stories. Then we made our final copies. Then we typed it on the computer. After that we went on Google and we got to pick out a picture for our stories. So that's how we made our Pour Quoi Stories. The book of our stories will be in the school library.

You can read our Pour Quoi stories here.

The Annual Peace Conference.

Hello, this is from the Student Council. Today only 5th grade Student Council went to Copper Creek Elementary School for The Annual Peace Conference. We had 13 elementary schools. A school named Iron Wood had their show chorus sing for all of us, CDO,Keiling,Rio Vista,Prince,Copper Creek, and more Amphi Dist. schools were there. We learned not to bully in all ways . We did a play to show others not to bully people. In the end we released blue balloons and 13 Doves to make a pledge that we will not bully. Everything went out great. Don't be a bully.

Helping People with Kiva.com

Kiva.org is a website that lends people small amounts of money so they can improve their lives. This is called microlending.
The class split into teams and examined the different people on kiva. Each team presented to the class for which person should get the loan.
We decided on José Antonio from Ecuador who needed money to repair his house. We loaned him $25. He needs $350 more
If you would like to join us and help others you can go to http://www.kiva.org/

Life Without Smartboards

Today, our smartboard went out for a few hours. It made us think about what if we didn't have it in our classroom. Here are a few comments.
School would be boring without a smart board because we couldn't do all the fun stuff that we can do with a smart board. It takes more time to do stuff without
the smart board. That's not really smart. Also, what if you had to do a math box review. You wold have to draw every question and it takes a lot of time.
by Wes
School would be good without a smartboard because today the smartboard didn't work and we still did our geography test without the smartboard. Usually we use the smartboard for the geography test but we didn't and we still did our geography test. So I think people can work without a smartboard.
By Taylor
School without smart boards would be the same. We would use whiteboards and we would have more computers and projecters . It would be odd at first but we would get used to it. And it would save money. Reading and social studies would be the same. We would just use a projecter and it would save money.

Our day!

Today we watched a video about a Mathemagican. He did really cool stuff like....He would have random people in the audience tell him their birth month and year and he would tell them the day of the week they were born on and he got all of them right!! Also, today we went to Art and we did lines such as angles, dots, dotted lines, horizontal lines, diagonal lines, and vertical lines.

We are still working on our book trailers. We saw a really good one for Gregor the Overlander. In math we worked on divisibility rules.

And that was our day!

The first day of school

Today was the first day of school. I love my class so far. Mr. Miller is an awesome teacher. A lot of my friends from last year are in my class this year. I have also met new friends. Today we introduced ourselves to the class. We also made Alliteration poems. It was a very good day and I think I'm going to have a good last year at Walker. :)

Room25online - That's Us

Welcome to our class blog.My intent is for it to be an ongoing interactive journal of the happenings in Room 25. It will be a daily (or almost daily) recap of our day at school. Parents can see what we did at school that day, students who were absent can begin to catch up on any work they might have missed - the possibilities for two-way communication are endless. Best of all, the blog will be entirely written by you, the students of room 25.This is a tool we can have a lot of fun with. It is a tool of the 21st century-maybe unlike anything you've used at Walker before. We will be able to give each other comments and feedback on our work. People all over the world will be able to see what we do. Do you have relatives who live outside of Tucson? Well, now they can keep up with what you're doing. Communication will be 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and all over the planet.
If you'd like some advice from last year's fifth graders click here.
We have a twitter and a Facebook page also. Check those out with the links on the right side of the page.

Robert Kimmel Smith

Robert Kimmel Smith is the author of War with Grandpa, Chocolate Fever and other children's books. He visited our class yesterday to talk to us about his life as a writer.

Mr. Smith has lead a fascinating life. He said that he uses situations around him for book ideas. He observes and listens. Other advice he gave to kids who want to write included to write in your head first and to keep your sentences short and sweet.

We shared our book projects with him. It was an honor to have him visit.

The Door Contest

It was Love of Reading Week at Walker this week so we had a door decorating contest. We picked the book Found for our door decoration because it was our class favorite . What we had to do in order to win the contest was tell the story without using words. We picked people who were missing in the past that were in the book to put on our poster. We wrote a small story about how they went missing and how old they were. We put our stories on paper and made it look old .
Also, we made it look like time travel . We put on an envelope that said,"You are one of the missing" , because that is in the book. We put on pictures of airplanes, hourglasses, and an elucidator. Also, it looks like there's a cave in the middle of the door and there is a clock in the word Found as the O. Then we put dates all over the door. We highly recommend this book to you.

Our door was voted Best Fifth Grade Door. Click here to see all the doors.
